Like the rest of the western world, we are deep into school (the first quarter ended last Friday!), but we’ve been lucky enough to engage in some invigorating extra-curricular activities. Firstly, Sarah talked the fam into doing the whale watching and beach trip she did at the beginning of the school year. We also (belatedly) celebrated Jane and James’s summer wedding with a little get-together. The guys ate steak and gambled (I'm ahead in Panama!) while the ladies and Raimon drank wine and painted ceramics. I'm the big winner since I came home with $14 from casino AND the lovely pitcher Sarah painted. Then we all got together to sing songs and watch the two newlyweds giggle while cutting Sarah's uber-intense death-by-chocolate cake. Did I mention that I keep winning at trivia night here in Panama? Last year Sarah and I won, and a few weeks ago I was again the lucky charm for my team. I have to admit that we got the band back together last week but only got second. Alas, my streak has ended. A few weeks ago we had a four-day weekend and drove west to Pedasí, a sleepy little town on the Azuero peninsula. Relaxing was on the agenda. And once we aggressively checked that off the list, it was time to get to work. We had to learn to surf! And nearby Playa Venao was the spot to do it. Our Australian instructor Tim fulfilled all positive stereotypes. Two majestic pictures of our three majestic offspring: On day two we successfully conquered Isla Iguana. Or perhaps it was already conquered. Yeah, the place was aptly named. Alternatives could have been Isla Hermit Congrejos and Isla Sunburnt Feet de Gringo. Other than some interesting door art and a bust of Mireya Moscoso, a local who became the first female president of Panama... ...Pedasí seemed like any other tiny Panamanian village. Most small towns have hot dog stand in front of the main church, along with amateurish paintings on store walls. Touché, Pedasí. You had a few tricks up your sleeve. Just this past weekend we wandered through the local flora for the umpteenth time, and saw a herd of coati for the first time! And with that we leave you with yet another duet by the Schnack boys: Happy 8th of October everybody!
